Pyroluria — biotype 1

Pyroluria — the metabolic imbalance that isn't taught in mainstream psychiatry

Pyroluria is a metabolic disorder in which the body loses zinc and vitamin B6 through urine. It affects up to 15% of the population and can look like anxiety, depression, burnout, or just "sensitivity" to everything.

Stress wears you down faster than it does other people. Supplements or medication occasionally make you feel worse. Noise, light, and chemicals bother you in ways others don't understand. You don't remember your dreams, and you've always had white spots on your nails. All of this can be a sign of pyroluria — a metabolic disorder that is practically unexamined in mainstream psychiatry, even though it can be objectively measured from a morning urine sample.

Does this sound familiar?

If this sounds like you, keep reading.

  • strong inner tension that's hard to release
  • you don't remember your dreams, or only remember fragments
  • white spots or cloudy patches on your nails
  • morning nausea, skipping breakfast
  • a strong reaction to a small dose of medication or alcohol
  • sensitivity to noise, light, and sun exposure.

What's actually happening in the body

During hemoglobin production, the body creates a byproduct molecule called kryptopyrroles (or HPL — hydroxyhemopyrrolin-2-one). Normally, the body excretes these in negligible amounts through urine.

In people with pyroluria, this output is markedly increased. Before excretion, kryptopyrroles strongly bind zinc and vitamin B6 in the blood — so the body loses these nutrients at an elevated rate.

Under stress, these losses increase further. That explains why people with pyroluria function well when living calmly — and fall apart under strain that others handle without a problem.

Why it isn't routinely tested

Pyroluria cannot be picked up by a standard blood count or a routine biochemical panel at a clinic. It requires a specific test for pyrrole molecules from a morning urine sample — and this test is only available through specialized international laboratories with validated methodology.

PsyLab makes this test accessible in Slovakia — including sample shipping, evaluation, and recommendations. Price €99, results within 2–4 weeks.

Without the test, we remain at the level of suspicion. Testing brings either confirmation and a clear plan, or ruling it out — and with that, the certainty to look elsewhere.

What nutritional support is used for pyroluria under the orthomolecular approach

With confirmed pyroluria, the orthomolecular approach is based on replenishing the nutrients the body loses through urine: zinc, active vitamin B6 (P5P), manganese, and sometimes GLA from evening primrose oil. Exact dosing is individual and should always be assessed by a specialist — zinc and B6 at high doses can have side effects, and some people are sensitive even to small amounts.

PsyLab does not prescribe treatment — we arrange the lab test, delivery of targeted nutritional supplements for your specific biotype, and an educational consultation where a consultant walks you through the results and explains the individual values. Any decision about actually taking something always remains between you and your doctor.

In published orthomolecular studies (Pfeiffer, Walsh), patients after several weeks of correctly adjusted supplementation report improved stress tolerance, better sleep quality, and the return of dream recall.
